My Upstairs Neighbor Kept Throwing Used Tea Bags Onto My Balcony

Living in an apartment building usually means accepting that you will occasionally hear your neighbors, see them in shared spaces, and deal with the small inconveniences that come with living close to other people.

But one woman found herself dealing with a particularly frustrating habit from the neighbor who lived above her.

Twice a day, used tea bags began appearing on her balcony.

The pattern was surprisingly consistent. Around 7 a.m. each morning, she would sometimes find a used tea bag that had been tossed down from the balcony above. Then, around 9 p.m., another one would appear.

At first, she assumed it might have been an accident. Perhaps the tea bags had been placed too close to the edge, or maybe something had simply gone wrong.

But after it happened repeatedly, she realized it was not an isolated incident.

The tea bags were clearly coming from the upstairs apartment.

Rather than immediately turning the situation into a confrontation, she decided to speak with her neighbor. She politely explained that the used tea bags were landing on her balcony and asked him to stop throwing them over the railing.

Instead of taking the complaint seriously, however, he laughed it off.

That response made the situation even more frustrating. She wasn’t asking for anything unreasonable. She simply wanted to enjoy her own balcony without having someone else’s waste dropped onto it.

The following morning, another used tea bag landed on her balcony.

At that point, she decided that simply asking politely wasn’t solving the problem. Instead of retaliating or creating an even bigger conflict, she began thinking about a way to address the situation while making it clear that shared living spaces require consideration.

She documented the incidents and considered involving the building’s management if the behavior continued. Keeping a record of repeated problems, she realized, could be far more effective than getting into an argument with her neighbor.

What had started as a minor annoyance had become a lesson in boundaries and respect.

Apartment living requires people to think about how their actions affect those around them. Something that seems insignificant to one person can quickly become a daily nuisance for someone else.

Throwing a used tea bag over a balcony may seem harmless, but when it repeatedly lands on another person’s property, it becomes a problem that should be addressed.

For the woman, the experience was a reminder that being patient doesn’t mean allowing someone to ignore reasonable boundaries. Sometimes the most effective response is not revenge, but calmly documenting the behavior, communicating clearly, and using appropriate channels to resolve the issue.

After all, respecting someone else’s home should be a basic part of being a good neighbor.
