Finding a tiny white larva inside a fresh strawberry can be enough to make even the biggest fruit lover pause before taking another bite.

Strawberries are supposed to be bright red, sweet, and juicy. So discovering something small and moving inside one can be surprising and unpleasant.

However, the presence of a tiny larva does not automatically mean that an entire container of strawberries is spoiled or dangerous.

One possible source is the spotted-wing drosophila, a small fruit fly that can lay eggs in ripening soft-skinned fruit. Unlike many common fruit flies, which are often associated with damaged or overripe produce, spotted-wing drosophila can affect fruit while it is still developing.

Strawberries are among the fruits that can be affected, along with crops such as raspberries, blueberries, cherries, and other soft fruits.

How Do Larvae Get Inside Strawberries?

Female spotted-wing drosophila have a specialized structure that allows them to deposit eggs in relatively firm, ripening fruit.

After the eggs hatch, the larvae are extremely small and pale. They can remain inside the fruit, where they may be difficult to notice from the outside.

This means a strawberry can look perfectly fresh at the grocery store while containing an insect larva that is not visible until the fruit is cut open.

The process can occur before the fruit is harvested, packaged, transported, or placed in a refrigerator. In other words, discovering a larva at home does not necessarily mean that something went wrong during packaging or storage.

Why Are They So Difficult to See?

The larvae can be tiny, particularly during their earliest stages.

Therefore, discovering an occasional insect does not automatically demonstrate that a farm, distributor, or grocery store failed to follow appropriate practices.

Are Strawberries Still Healthy?

Yes. The possibility of occasionally encountering an insect does not eliminate the nutritional value of strawberries.

Strawberries provide nutrients such as vitamin C and fiber, along with naturally occurring plant compounds. They can be part of a balanced diet and are commonly enjoyed fresh or incorporated into breakfasts, snacks, salads, smoothies, and desserts.

The discovery of an insect may change how you feel about one particular berry, but it does not fundamentally change what strawberries are as a food.

They are still nutrient-rich fruit grown in a natural environment.

What Should You Do If You Find a Larva?

If you cut open a strawberry and notice a tiny white larva, there is no need to panic.

You can discard the affected berry if you do not want to eat it. Then inspect the remaining fruit and discard anything showing obvious signs of spoilage.

Rinse the strawberries you plan to eat under cool running water and store them appropriately.

If the berries otherwise look fresh and healthy, finding one insect does not automatically mean that the entire container is dangerous.

And if the discovery makes you lose your appetite for strawberries for the day, that is understandable too.

The occasional discovery of an insect can certainly be surprising.
