It seems completely harmless.
You’re cooking dinner, your hands are wet, and the oven handle is right there. So you drape the kitchen towel over it and continue preparing your meal.
It’s convenient. It’s common. And most people probably never give it another thought.
But there are a few reasons why keeping a towel on the oven handle while the oven is operating isn’t always a good idea.
The Heat Can Damage the Towel
Your oven generates a lot of heat, and although the outside of the appliance is designed to be safer to touch than the interior, areas around the door can still become quite warm.
A towel hanging directly from the handle may be exposed to heat for an extended period.
Depending on the oven, the fabric, and how the towel is positioned, prolonged heating can cause it to:
- Become excessively hot
- Develop scorch marks
- Produce unpleasant odors
- Become damaged or discolored
- Potentially create a fire hazard under unfavorable conditions
This doesn’t mean every towel hanging from every oven will suddenly catch fire. The actual risk varies considerably between appliances and circumstances.
But there’s little benefit to keeping a combustible fabric item close to a heat-producing appliance when an easy alternative exists.
The Towel Can Also Get in the Way
Another issue is the oven door itself.
If a towel becomes bunched up, trapped, or positioned between the door and its frame, it can interfere with the door’s ability to close properly.
A poorly sealed oven can allow heat to escape and make it harder for the appliance to maintain its intended temperature.
That could contribute to:
- Longer cooking times
- Uneven cooking
- Poor baking results
- Excessive heat escaping into the kitchen
The towel isn’t necessarily going to cause these problems simply by hanging from the handle, but it’s worth checking that nothing is preventing the door from closing and sealing correctly.
There’s Also a Risk for Children
A towel hanging from an oven handle can be particularly tempting to a young child.
A toddler may see it as something to grab or pull.
If pulling the towel causes the oven door to open, a child could potentially come into contact with a hot surface or hot cookware.
This is especially concerning in households where children are beginning to explore their surroundings.
Keeping loose objects away from oven doors and other hot appliances is therefore a simple precaution.
Pets Can Get Involved Too
Dogs and cats can also turn an innocent-looking towel into a problem.
A curious pet may pull on it, catch a claw in it, or knock it down while moving around the kitchen.
Even if the towel itself isn’t dangerous, anything that causes a hot oven door or nearby cookware to move unexpectedly can create an unnecessary hazard.
So Where Should You Keep Your Kitchen Towels?
Fortunately, you don’t have to sacrifice convenience.
A few alternatives include:
Wall hooks:
Place one near your food-preparation area but away from the stove and oven.
A dedicated towel rack:
A small rack gives your towels a permanent home while keeping them accessible.
Magnetic hooks:
If you have a suitable metal surface away from heat, these can save valuable space.
An apron with a towel loop:
For people who cook frequently, this keeps a towel within easy reach without putting it on the oven.
Don’t Forget About Damp Towels
There’s another good reason to give your kitchen towels their own space.
A towel that’s repeatedly used and left damp can develop unpleasant odors and become a less hygienic cleaning tool.
Hanging it somewhere with good airflow allows it to dry more quickly.
If a towel has been used to clean up food spills or particularly messy surfaces, washing it regularly is also important.
A Small Habit Worth Changing
Putting a towel on the oven handle isn’t automatically going to cause a disaster. The risk depends on the oven, the towel, its position, and how long it’s exposed to heat.
Still, there’s little reason to take the chance when a wall hook or towel rack can accomplish the same thing more safely.
Keep fabrics away from hot surfaces, make sure nothing interferes with the oven door seal, and keep loose towels out of easy reach of young children and pets.
It’s a tiny change, but sometimes the simplest kitchen-safety improvements are the ones we notice only after someone points them out.
The oven handle may be convenient—but your kitchen towel doesn’t need to live there.
