Eventually, the money inside Oliver’s little piggy bank was gone. But the meaning behind it stayed with us.
Whenever I notice those small piggy banks resting on our mantel, I’m reminded that even the simplest gestures can make a lasting impression. Mrs. Adele once shared something that has stayed with me: people may not remember exactly what you gave them, but they often remember how your kindness made them feel.
I believe there is a lot of truth in that.
Kindness is not about keeping track of who gave what or expecting something in return. It is about noticing when someone could use a little encouragement, offering help when you are able, and creating opportunities for others to experience that same generosity.
That morning, our porch was lined with piggy banks. Each one represented a small contribution, but together they became part of something much more meaningful. By the end of the day, our neighborhood was sharing stories, smiles, and reminders of how thoughtful actions can bring people closer.
The experience taught us a simple lesson: kindness does not have to be grand or complicated to matter.
Sometimes, it begins with something as small as sharing what you have, offering a helping hand, or taking a moment to make someone’s day a little brighter.
And once kindness is shared, it can continue moving from one person to another in ways we may never see.
The money in Oliver’s piggy bank may have been spent, but the lesson it helped create has stayed with us. Those little piggy banks became more than objects sitting on a mantel. They became reminders that generosity can inspire generosity, and that even a small thoughtful action can become part of a much bigger story.
In the end, we may never know how far a kind gesture will travel. But that is part of what makes kindness so meaningful. We simply have the opportunity to start the chain.
