When we scream, yank their leash, or violently shove them away in a panic, we are not teaching them that the behavior is bad—we are simply confusing them. From their perspective, they attempted a polite introduction, and we responded with sudden, irrational aggression.

  • Offer an Alternative Scent Target: Teach the dog to greet people by offering their hand low for a back-of-the-hand sniff, which provides plenty of skin scent without invading personal space.

  • Use Cue Words: Train reliable cues such as “sit,” “leave it,” or “watch me” so that when a dog approaches a guest, you can redirect their attention before the awkward sniff occurs.
