My Water Bill Kept Rising Every Month — Then I Followed the Hose Into My Neighbor’s Yard and Discovered the Real Reason

For months, I couldn’t figure out what was happening to my water bill.

I live alone, my daily routine hadn’t changed, and I wasn’t doing anything that should have caused a dramatic increase in water usage.

At first, I assumed I had a plumbing problem.

I checked the faucets.

I inspected the toilets.

I looked beneath the sinks and around the walls for signs of moisture.

Nothing seemed wrong.

There were no puddles, no dripping pipes, and no obvious signs of a leak.

Still, the bill continued climbing.

I eventually started wondering whether the water meter itself was malfunctioning.

Then one night, everything changed.

It was around two in the morning when I happened to look outside.

Something caught my attention near the side of my house.

There was a garden hose connected to my outdoor faucet.

I immediately knew it wasn’t mine.

The hose stretched across the ground and disappeared underneath the fence separating my property from my neighbor’s yard.

My neighbor, Frank, lived next door.

Suddenly, his perfectly green lawn came to mind.

Even during particularly dry weeks, his grass always looked remarkably healthy. While everyone else was watering their yards carefully, Frank’s lawn somehow remained lush.

I had never thought much about it before.

Now I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

The next morning, I walked over and asked him about the hose.

Frank looked surprised.

He glanced toward the fence and then back at me.

He said he must have connected it without realizing it was attached to my faucet.

He apologized, disconnected the hose, and took it back into his yard.

His explanation seemed suspiciously simple, but I decided not to make a bigger issue out of it.

Maybe it really had been a mistake.

Unfortunately, the situation didn’t end there.

The following night, I woke up again.

And there it was.

The hose was back.

This time, I didn’t confront Frank immediately.

Instead, I decided to see where it went.

I put on a jacket, stepped outside, and followed the hose along the side of his property.

At first, everything looked exactly as I expected.

The hose passed through his yard and went near his sprinkler system.

Then it continued farther.

Eventually, it disappeared through a partially open basement window.

I stopped.

That didn’t make sense.

If Frank was using my water to keep his lawn green, why was the hose going inside his house?

I moved a little closer.

I could hear water running somewhere below.

Then I heard voices.

Frank was talking to someone.

“Give it another twenty minutes,” he said.

A woman’s voice answered.

“You said that yesterday.”

I froze.

As far as I knew, Frank lived alone.

Who was the woman in his basement?

I didn’t want to get any closer, so I carefully backed away.

Unfortunately, my foot bumped into a flowerpot.

The sound wasn’t loud, but it was enough to make me nervous.

I returned home immediately.

A few minutes later, my phone buzzed.

It was a message from Frank.

He knew I had been outside.

I didn’t respond.

Instead, I opened the security-camera app on my phone.

That’s when I saw something even more confusing.

Frank was standing outside my house.

He wasn’t alone for long.

A woman appeared in the background and climbed out through the basement window on his property.

Her clothes were damp, and she was carrying a large container.

At that point, I knew this was no longer something I should try to investigate myself.

I contacted the authorities and explained what I had seen.

The dispatcher instructed me to remain inside and avoid approaching either Frank or the woman.

A short time later, officers arrived.

I expected Frank to be arrested immediately.

Instead, the situation became even more confusing.

The woman was with the officers.

She introduced herself as Dana.

Then she explained what had actually been happening.

Dana worked in environmental field inspection.

For some time, several people in the neighborhood had reported unusual odors and strange changes around an older drainage system.

Frank had noticed something unusual near his property and had contacted the appropriate authorities.

During the investigation, Dana had been collecting samples and examining parts of an aging drainage connection located near Frank’s basement.

The hose had been part of that work.

The water wasn’t being used
