The woman, who had reportedly struggled with severe osteoarthritis for many years, had sought alternative pain relief after conventional treatments failed to provide lasting comfort. Osteoarthritis is one of the most common joint conditions worldwide and occurs when the protective cartilage inside joints gradually wears down over time. This often leads to stiffness, swelling, inflammation, and chronic pain that can significantly affect daily life.
According to reports, the woman had experienced ongoing discomfort despite using standard medications such as anti-inflammatory drugs and pain relievers. Unfortunately, some of these medications also caused stomach irritation and digestive side effects, prompting her to explore other forms of treatment.
She eventually turned to acupuncture, a traditional therapy practiced in many parts of Asia and increasingly used around the world for pain management and relaxation. Acupuncture typically involves placing extremely thin needles into specific points on the body in an effort to stimulate nerves, muscles, and circulation.
However, doctors examining her X-rays discovered something far beyond a standard acupuncture session. The images revealed numerous small metallic objects — identified as gold acupuncture needles or gold thread implants — intentionally left inside the tissue around her knee joints.
In some alternative medicine practices, especially in certain regions of Asia, tiny gold needle fragments are sometimes implanted under the skin with the belief that they may provide long-term stimulation or ongoing pain relief. Supporters of the technique claim the embedded metal can help reduce discomfort associated with arthritis and chronic joint conditions.
Medical experts, however, caution that leaving foreign materials inside the body may carry risks.
Specialists explain that the human body naturally reacts to objects it recognizes as foreign. This response can trigger inflammation, scar tissue formation, irritation, or, in some cases, infection. While some patients may not experience immediate problems, complications can develop over time depending on the location and amount of implanted material.
Doctors also note that metal fragments embedded in tissue can complicate future medical imaging and procedures. X-rays may become more difficult to interpret because the metallic objects can obscure surrounding anatomy. Even more importantly, patients with unidentified metal fragments in their bodies must be cautious when undergoing MRI scans.
